Creating and Managing URL Redirects Guideline

Creating and Managing URL Redirects Guideline

URL redirects are essential for maintaining a seamless user experience and preserving SEO when URLs are changed or removed. Follow this guideline to create and manage URL redirects efficiently.

1. Considerations for URL Redirects

  • Limitations: URLs starting with /apps, /application, /cart, /orders, etc., cannot be redirected.
  • Broken URLs Only: Redirects work only on URLs showing errors (e.g., 404).
  • Redirect Limits: The maximum number of redirects is 100,000 unless using the Plus plan, which allows up to 20,000,000 redirects.
  • Supported Paths: Only redirect broken pages, not fixed Shopify paths like /products.

2. Creating URL Redirects

  • Go to Content > Menus in your admin panel.
  • Select View URL Redirects > Create URL Redirect.
  • Fill in the fields:
    • Redirect From: Enter the old URL.
    • Redirect To: Enter the destination URL.
  • Use relative URLs (e.g., /collection/shirts) for the same domain or full URLs for external domains.
  • Click Save Redirect.

3. Troubleshooting URL Redirects

If a redirect doesn’t work:

  • Check for typos in the Redirect From and Redirect To fields.
  • Ensure the old URL no longer points to an active page.
  • Confirm the URL is not a fixed path or unsupported prefix.
  • Clear the browser cache or try another device.

4. Managing URL Redirects

  • Filtering Redirects by Date:
    • Go to Content > Menus > URL Redirects.
    • Click Date Added and choose a time range.
  • Saving Filters:
    • Apply filters and save them as tabs for future use.
  • Editing Redirects:
    • Edit individual redirects by selecting them.
    • Use bulk actions to update multiple redirects simultaneously.
  • Exporting Redirects:
    • Export redirects as CSV files for backup or migration.
  • Importing Redirects:
    • Import a CSV file with redirect data. Use Shopify’s sample CSV as a template.

5. Deleting URL Redirects

  • Navigate to Content > Menus > URL Redirects.
  • Select the redirects you want to delete.
  • Click More Actions > Delete Selected Redirects.
  • Confirm the deletion.

By following this guideline, you can effectively manage URL redirects to optimize user navigation and maintain SEO health for your Shopify store.
