1. Automating Product Group Creation: When to Use It
While manually creating a product group is simple, it can become time-consuming, especially for stores with a large number of products. Managing many items individually can quickly turn into a lengthy and resource-intensive process.
However, automation can save significant time if the products you wish to group share common elements in their titles. For example, products like:
iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB - Black
iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB - White
iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB - Gold
Since these titles have a similar structure, the automation feature can easily detect and group the pattern efficiently. By leveraging automation, you can quickly streamline the process and group-related products, reducing manual effort and speeding up the overall workflow.
Click the “Create group” button from the product groups management interface.
You will then see three options: create manual - single group, create manual - multiple options and automated groups. Select automation.
In the automated group creation interface, enter the necessary information, including:
Product title pattern: This is the typical pattern for the products to be grouped. Providing an accurate pattern will enhance the effectiveness of product grouping. Details on how to determine this will be covered in the next section.
Appearance on product page/card: This determines how the group options will be displayed on the storefront/product card. There are 8 display options: Button, Pill Button, Circle Swatch, and Square Swatch,…
Enter the <variant>: This is the name of the option by which the products will be grouped (e.g., by color, style, etc.).
Activate new groups: Set this off to check your groups before publishing on the live site. Set this on to publish your groups immediately.
After filling out the information, click “Run automation” to start the automatic grouping process. This process typically takes about 15 to 30 seconds, depending on the number of products in the store. Once the automatic grouping is complete, the application will redirect you back to the product groups management interface.
To automatically group products, it's crucial to define a title pattern that captures the shared structure of the product names. This pattern generally consists of two key parts: <product_name> and <type>. By identifying the right pattern, the system can group products that share the same base name but differ in specific attributes, such as color or size.
For example, if your store has the following products:
· iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB - Black
iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB - White
iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB - Red
The appropriate pattern here would be: <product_name> - <type>, where:
<product_name> refers to "iPhone 15 Pro Max 12GB / 1TB"
<type> represents the color attribute, such as "Black", "White", or "Red"
In another case, if your product titles look like:
Men's Golf Polo / Red
Men's Golf Polo / White
Men's Golf Polo / Black
Men's Golf Polo / Green
The pattern would be: <product_name> / <type>, where:
<product_name> refers to "Men's Golf Polo"
<type> indicates the color variation, such as "Red", "White", "Black", or "Green"
By establishing this pattern, the system can automatically group products that share the same base name (<product_name>) and treat the differences in <type> as variations or options.
To ensure the automation process works smoothly, it’s essential that the product titles follow a consistent format. Even small discrepancies in naming, such as using "Men's Golf Polo" versus "Men's golf polo," can cause the grouping to fail. Make sure the names are uniform to allow successful grouping.
