How to use the Split Products feature

How to use the Split Products feature

How Split product works

  1. Split products with multiple variants into individual single products.
  2. Each product will have its own name, media, description, and URL.
  3. After splitting, the split products will automatically be grouped back into a product group. The grouping will be based on the option(s) used for splitting.
  4. A product must have at least 2 variants to be eligible for splitting.

Why Many Shopify merchants use Split Products feature

  1. Boost SEO & Discovery: Automatically optimizes listings for higher search rankings, helping more customers find your products easily.
  2. Streamlined Inventory Management: Real-time tracking and seamless sync with platforms like Etsy, eBay, and others—saving time and preventing errors.

This guide will walk you through every step to get additional control over variant displays on Shopify and present them as individual products.

Step by step guide

Step 1: Access Split Products feature

Open the Shopify Admin, find app G: Combined Listings & Variants → Click on the tab “Split products” on the app’s left tab menu → Click “Split products” button on the top right.

Step 2: Choosing product for splitting

Select one or more products to split by checking the box next to each product.

Step 3: Configure the Split Products Feature

Split by (Split by Option)

  1. Select the option(s) to split by (e.g., Color, Size).
  2. The app automatically detects all available options from the product.

Example: For the product in the image with 2 options (size and color), the app will detect both. If you only want to split by 1 option, delete the other one.

Split product status: Set the status for the split products: Active or Draft.

Archive original product: When enabled, the original product will be moved to Archive status.

  1. Product title pattern: Set the title pattern for the split products.
    1. {product_title} = original product name
    2. {option_value_1} = value of the first option
    3. {option_value_2} = value of the second option

Example:

  1. Original product: "Cotton T-shirt" with Color (Red, Green) and Size (S, M, L)
  2. Title pattern: {product_title} - {option_value_1} {option_value_2}
  3. So for an example product – Cotton T-Shirt in Red color, Size S.
  4. The title pattern will be:
    1. Product title – Cotton T-Shirt
    2. Option value 1 – Red
    3. Option value 2) – S
  5. Result: "Cotton T-shirt - Red S", "Cotton T-shirt - Green M", etc.

Notes Related to Product Title Pattern:

1. Match the Number of Options: The number of options used for splitting must match the number of option values in the title.

Example: Shirt product; splitting by 2 options: color (blue, red) & size (big, small)

  1. If the title pattern is {product_title} - {option_value_1}, it won't split. Because that title pattern would result in "Shirt blue" → conflicts with the number of selected options for splitting.
  2. The title pattern must be {product_title} - {option_value_1} - {option_value_2} or {product_title} - {option_value_2} - {option_value_1}.

Match the Number of Options

2. When Splitting Multiple Products with Different Numbers of Options
  1. When splitting multiple products with varying numbers of options, the title pattern must include enough placeholders for the product with the most options. The app will automatically omit unnecessary placeholders for products with fewer options.

Example in the image: Splitting 2 products with different numbers of options at once. If the title pattern is as shown, the app will mark as error and not split.

✅ Correct way: Set product title pattern to {product_title} - {option_value_1} {option_value_2}. Then the app will automatically set the titles for the 2 products:

  1. Product A: 1 option (Color) → {product_title} - {option_value_1}
  2. Product B: 2 options (Color + Size) → {product_title} - {option_value_1} {option_value_2}

3. You Can Arrange the Order of Option Values in the Title or Change Characters in the Title Pattern

Example in the image: Option value 2 is placed before 1.

Change characters: Add text, or use special characters between option values, product title, etc.

Image Configuration

  1. Keep all: Copy all images from the original product to the split products.
  2. Variant image only: Use only the images assigned to each corresponding variant.

SEO Configuration
  1. If the SEO title is left blank, it will automatically use the product title of each split product.
  2. If the SEO description is left blank, it will inherit the original grouped product’s description, which can cause duplicate SEO descriptions (a critical SEO error).
    Warning
→ We recommend configuring a unique SEO description. Variables can be used.

These variables will be dynamically crawled from the split product.

Example variables insertion: Get the {product_title} by {product_vendor}. Only {product_price_min} for this premium {product_type}. Shop now for the best deals and fast shipping!

Example on search engine: Get the Tea cup - S (100ml - 350ml) by Grouptify. Only $10 for this premium tea cup. Shop now for the best deals and fast shipping!

Step 4: After finishing, click Split products.

The image below illustrates the screen of products being split. You can see the status is “Splitting”.

After the app has finished splitting, it displays similarly to a product group as the split products are automatically grouped. Besides, in your Shopify Store – Products tab, new products will be added.

The created groups will automatically appear in the Ready to Publish tab.

For groups in the Ready to Publish tab:

Select Edit to review the group before publishing.

Inventory Syncing:

  1. Don't sync inventory
    1. Product inventory is set to 0. Please go to Shopify product admin to configure.
  1. Sync inventory from original product
    1. Product inventory syncs automatically from the matching original product variants.

After configuring, click Publish.

After configuring, click Publish.

Managing Groups Created Automatically After Splitting:

Published groups can be viewed in:

(1) Published tab in Split products

(1) Published tab in Split products

(2) In Product Groups

(2) In Product Groups

NotesNote: When deleting a product group in either place above, only the product group (created automatically after splitting) is deleted. The split products and original product remain unchanged in Shopify Product Admin.

To delete split products, go to Shopify Product Admin and delete them like normal products.
