Adding sub-groups to single-option groups allows you to build multi-level product groups. This helps create cleaner, more professional product presentations for your Shopify store.
- Benefits for merchants: Sub-groups allow you to segment products within a single option for more granular organization and control.
- Benefits for buyers: Sub-groups make it easy to highlight unique selling points (USPs) directly on the product page. Customers can instantly see the difference between options like "Limited Edition" and "Standard Edition," helping them understand why certain variants have higher value or exclusivity.
Example Use Case
- You sell T-shirts and use a single option called Color.
- You want to separate regular colors from limited-edition ones (e.g., Gradient, Hologram, Metallic).
Instead of creating a second option, you create a sub-group called Limited Colors and another one named Regular Colors inside the main Color group.
Step-by-Step: How to Create Sub-Groups
1. Navigate to the Option Group Go to your app dashboard → Product Groups → Create Group → select Create Sub-group.

2. Enter Names
- Group Name (internal use only): Name your group for easy management.
- Sub-Group Name: Enter the visible name customers will see (e.g., “Limited Colors”, “Premium Finishes”, “Seasonal Collection”).
Pro tips: Click the “here” button next to the field to get intelligent naming suggestions based on your store’s existing tags, collections, or product titles.3. Choose Appearance (Product Page & Product Card) Select how this sub-group should look:
- More than 10 built-in styles available (swatches, dropdowns, buttons, pills, color chips, image thumbnails, etc.).
- Product Page appearance and Product Card (collection page, search page, etc.) appearance can be set independently.
4. Add Option Values
Type or select the specific values that belong to this sub-group (e.g., Black, Navy).

Click the “+” button to add as many values as needed.

Pro tips: You can create unlimited sub-groups inside the same main option group.
5. Assign Products / Variants After saving the sub-group:
Go to the product list.
For each relevant variant, select a product to assign to the correct sub-group and option values (e.g., Limited Colors → Navy).

Products assigned to a sub-group will automatically display using the style you chose.
Notes: If one option value is not assigned with any product, it will not be accessible on the storefront.
6. Save & Preview See the preview pane on the right to confirm the new sub-group appears exactly as intended. When you finish, click Save / Publish to make it active on the storefront, or click Save draft.
