Automatically Creating Product Groups by Metafield

Automatically Creating Product Groups by Metafield

What is Auto-Group by Metafield?

Manually organizing products works for small stores but gets tricky with many items.

Grouping products using Automation by Metafield allows you to bulk group thousands of products at once, creating multiple product groups simultaneously. This approach saves time and reduces manual work by automating the grouping process and significantly speeding up operations.

Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Navigate to Product Groups

  • Open the app dashboard

  • Go to Product Groups

  • Click Create Group button

Step 2: Select Bulk Create By Metafields option

Step 3: Follow the Progress

You will see the progress of automation as the app processes your products. The interface will guide you through each stage of creating groups by metafields.

Step 4: Metafield Setup

The following 2 metafields are required to create product groups:

grouptify.options (Single line text)

grouptify.option_values (Single line text)

The app will check if they exist in your Shopify store. Next to each metafield, you'll see a status badge:

✅ Created - Metafield already exists in your store

❌ Not created - Metafield needs to be created

If either shows "Not created", click [CREATE DEFINITIONS] button. The app will automatically set them up for your store.

Step 5: Add Metafield Values to Products

Watch the short video guide for step by step instruction

For each product you want to group, add values to these metafields in Shopify:

In Shopify Admin:

  • Open a product

  • Scroll to Metafields section

  • Fill in both fields:

    • grouptify.options — The option type(s) this product has

    • grouptify.option_values — The specific value(s) for this product

  • Click Save

Example:

For a "Red T-Shirt Size M":

  1. grouptify.options = Color/Size
  2. grouptify.option_values = Red/M

What You Have

Option Names

Option Values

Single option

Color

Red

Two options

Color/Size

Red/M

Three options

Color/Size/Material

Red/M/Cotton

Wrong:

  • Color, Size (comma instead of slash)

  • Color Size (space instead of slash)

  • Color/Size = Red (mismatched counts)

Step 6: Select an Identifier

An identifier is what products have in common. The app uses this to find and group matching products together.

Choose ONE method for identifying which products belong together:

Match by Title: Groups products with the exact same title.

Match by Tag: Groups products with the exact same tag starting with GR_.

  • Example: GR_SUMMER24

Match by SKU: Groups products with the exact same SKU (taken from the first variant's SKU).

Match by Custom Metafield: Groups products with the exact same value in a custom metafield.

Alert
If you choose this identifier, you MUST create a custom metafield and ensure all products in the same group have exact same values in that metafield.

Setup: Enter the metafield Namespace and Key so the app can identify matching products

Step 7: Choose Publishing Method

Toggle ON → Groups publish immediately after creating to your storefront

Toggle OFF → Groups save as drafts after creating for review first

Step 8: Run Automation

Click [RUN AUTOMATION] to start the auto-grouping process.

Step 9: Manage Your Groups

After creating groups, you can see them in the Product Groups list.

Edit, View/Preview (See how the group displays on your storefront), Resync (Update product information).
